Written by Louise Manigault

A young minister was called to pastor a well-established congregation in a town upstate.  When he arrived, he was happy to see a seemed to be a thriving congregation.  During his first weeks, he attended meetings of the different ministries to get a better sense of the church’s vision and activities.

The minister was amazed by a few things.  First people had been serving in the same positions as chairpersons for many years with very few changes in leadership.  Most of the programs followed the same format and were somewhat out of date with the current climate.  He also found that the members of the young adult ministry were all over 50.  They told him they joined the ministry when they were in college and remained.  There were only two true young adults involved.  When he met with the church council and began to make suggestions for change, he was met with opposition.  Their most familiar chant was, “Why should we change anything? We’ve always done things this way!”

If you stepped outside of your life and took a long objective view of how you are living, what would you observe?  Are you doing the same thing year in and year out?   Do you stay in the same relationships even though they no longer work for you?  Do you maintain the status quo in your home and work life because it is comfortable?   Have you allowed yourself to be complacent about your personal habits? Are you inflexible about changing anything around you and within yourself? Have you tried to make some strides toward changing only to give up on the ideas when you are met with an obstacle?

Many times, people live without having a vision for their lives.  If you are not growing and enriching your life each year, you are stagnating.   If you are not changing with the times, you  If you listen to people who are bored and frustrated, you will also notice that they are not doing anything different.  They have not taken any action to move forward with changes.  It is easier to keep things the way they are.

Having a vision for your life is the first step to making changes.  Once you have a vision, you then have to decide on your plan or blueprint.  That plan will help you to stay on course for the changes that you are trying to make.  As you work through your plan, there will be obstacles and temporary setbacks, but when you are sure of your vision, you will continue to move forward with your plan.   You will realize that those temporary setbacks are designed to make you give up, but if you know that your vision is clear, you will be able to conquer those obstacles and continue on the path to your victory.  Stick with your vision and you will watch the obstacles as they fall apart to clear your way.   Celebrate the challenges and know that they are signs of a new beginning and spectacular changes that will lead to your success.
